Using VIDA Coworking as Your Business Address: What You Need to Know About Oregon Requirements
One of the most common questions we get from new members at our Portland and Beaverton locations—especially solopreneurs, freelancers, and small business owners—is about using a coworking space as a business address in Oregon. It’s a great question, and the answer is more nuanced than a simple yes or no. Let’s break down what you actually need to know about Oregon business address requirements, the principal place of business rules, and how VIDA can support your business.
Understanding the Different Types of Business Addresses
First, it helps to understand that not all “business addresses” are created equal. Whether you’re registering an LLC in Oregon or simply need a professional mailing address, there are different categories, each serving different purposes:
- Mailing Address: Where you receive mail and packages. Pretty straightforward.
- Business Address: The address you use on your website, business cards, and marketing materials.
- Principal Place of Business: Your company’s central administrative office—the location where you actually conduct business operations. This is what the Oregon Secretary of State requires when you register your LLC, corporation, or other business entity.
- Registered Agent Address: Where you’ll receive legal documents and official state correspondence (this can be the same as your principal place of business, but doesn’t have to be).
Oregon’s Principal Place of Business Requirements
Here’s where things get specific. When you register a business in Oregon, the Secretary of State requires you to list a principal place of business. According to Oregon law, this must be “the location in this state of the central administrative office of a person conducting business in this state.”
The key requirement? It must be a physical location—not a virtual office or commercial mail receiving agency.
This is explicitly stated in Oregon’s business privacy guidelines: “A commercial mail receiving agency does not meet this requirement. This includes virtual or cloud based offices.”
Can You Use VIDA Coworking as Your Oregon Business Address?
Yes, if you’re actually working from VIDA.
If you’re a VIDA member with a Dedicated Desk, Private Office, or full-time active membership where you regularly conduct your business operations at our Northeast Portland or Beaverton coworking space, then yes—VIDA can serve as your principal place of business for Oregon registration. You’re physically here, you’re working here, and this is where your business operations happen.
Since our address does come up as a commercial mail receiving agency, you must submit hard copy paper applications to the State of Oregon—and don’t worry, we can help! Come see us at the front desk and we will make sure it gets to the right place.
What About Our Virtual Mailbox Service?
Our Virtual Mailbox service is perfect for receiving mail and packages, but it does not qualify as a principal place of business under Oregon law. Virtual mailbox services fall under the category of “commercial mail receiving agencies,” which Oregon specifically excludes.
However, if you have a Virtual Mailbox and an active full-time coworking membership here at VIDA, then you could use our Portland or Beaverton address for both mail services and as your principal place of business.
Google My Business Listings: Requirements for Coworking Spaces
Here’s another layer to consider: if you want to list your business on Google My Business (now called Google Business Profile) using a coworking space address, Google has specific requirements that are even more stringent than Oregon’s business registration rules.
According to Google’s coworking space guidelines, “Businesses can’t list an office at a co-working space unless that office maintains clear signage, receives customers at the location during business hours, and is staffed during business hours by your business staff.”
What This Means for VIDA Members:
Full-Time Private Office Members: If you have a dedicated private office at VIDA Portland or Beaverton, you can potentially create a Google Business Profile using VIDA’s address. You’ll need:
- Clear signage on your office door (your business name or logo)
- To be staffed during your stated business hours
- To be able to receive customers/clients at VIDA during those hours
All Other Membership Types: Unfortunately, Dedicated Desk, OPEN Flex and PT Flex coworking members and virtual mailbox users do not meet Google’s requirements for a Business Profile. Google requires that dedicated, permanent space with visible signage—which essentially means a private office.
This isn’t a VIDA policy—it’s Google’s requirement for coworking spaces. Many coworking members have tried to create Business Profiles only to have them suspended by Google when they can’t verify the signage and dedicated space requirements.
Why All These Rules?
You might be wondering why Oregon business address requirements are all so complicated. The rules exist for a few important reasons:
Transparency: Both Oregon and Google want to ensure that businesses can be found at their stated location. This protects consumers and maintains trust in the business ecosystem.
Preventing Fraud: These requirements help prevent businesses from creating multiple fake listings or hiding their true location.
Legal Accountability: Your principal place of business is where legal documents can be served. It needs to be a real, verifiable location.
The Bottom Line: What Can You Do with VIDA’s Address?
Let’s make this practical. Here’s what you CAN do at VIDA Coworking in Portland and Beaverton:
✓ Use VIDA as your business address on marketing materials if you’re an active member
✓ Receive mail and packages through our Virtual Mailbox service or any other active Coworking Membership
✓ List VIDA as your principal place of business when registering with the Oregon Secretary of State, if you’re an active coworking member who works here regularly, which means an OPEN Flex membership and above
✓ Create a Google Business Profile if you have a full-time private office onsite
✓ Meet clients and customers at VIDA in our beautiful meeting rooms and throughout the space

FAQ: Using a Coworking Space as Your Business Address in Oregon
Q: Can I use a coworking space address for my LLC in Oregon? A: Yes, if you’re an active member who regularly works from the coworking space. Oregon requires a physical principal place of business, not just a virtual mailbox.
Q: Does VIDA Coworking qualify as a registered agent in Oregon? A: While you can use VIDA as your principal place of business, you’ll need to designate a registered agent separately (this can be you, or a registered agent service).
Q: Can I get a Google My Business listing with a coworking membership? A: Only if you have a full-time private office with signage (which we provide). Dedicated desk and flex memberships don’t meet Google’s requirements for coworking spaces.
Q: What’s the difference between a mailing address and principal place of business? A: A mailing address is simply where you receive mail. A principal place of business is your central administrative office where you conduct business operations—which Oregon requires to be a physical location.
Q: Where is VIDA Coworking located? A: VIDA has two locations serving the Portland metro area: Northeast Portland and Beaverton, Oregon.
